Montmirail (Sarthe)

Montmirail is a commune with 407 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Sarthe in the Pays de la Loire; it belongs to the district Mamers and is the administrative center of the canton of Montmirail (Sarthe ).

History

Montmirail had been in Roman times - as Mons Mirabilis - a fortified place. The oldest part of the present castle dates from the 12th century, however, of which, however, most of it was destroyed during the Hundred Years War.

1169 met at the castle of the King of France ( Louis VII ) and the King of England ( Henry II ), to discuss the agreement between Henry and Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury.
