Montreal Symphony Orchestra

The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal ( OSM; . Engl Montreal Symphony Orchestra, MSO) is one of the world's leading symphony orchestras. It has its seat in the Canadian city of Montreal. The performances will take place mainly in the Cultural Place des Arts. The OSM is one of the two resident orchestra of the Opéra de Montréal.

History

There were a total of four symphony orchestra with that name. The first was founded in 1845 and dissolved in 1896. The second existed from 1898 to 1919, the third of 1927 until 1929. The foundation of the present-day Montreal Symphony Orchestra in 1934 is due to efforts by Wilfrid Pelletier. The first concert of the Société des concerts symphoniques de Montréal took place on 14 January 1935. In 1954, the orchestra moved to its present name.

The OSM has so far received two Grammys: 1996 for the recording of the opera Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz and 2000 for the recording of Bartok's 3rd Piano Concerto with Martha Argerich.
