Moritz von Engelhardt

Otto Moritz Ludwig von Engelhardt (Russian Мориц Федорович фон Энгельгардт; * 27 Novemberjul / December 8 1779greg in Good Why / Estonia, .. .. † 29 Januarjul / February 10 1842greg in Dorpat ) was a Baltic German mineralogist.

Life

Engelhardt was a member of the noble family Engelhardt, first he attended the Cathedral School in Tallinn and Ritter. With increasing interest in nature and the fact occurring rocks, he decided to study the mineralogy at the Freiberg. His father told him this course and urged him to start studying law at the University of Leipzig. After a short period of study in Leipzig and then in Göttingen Engelhardt finished due to lack of interest the study. Even before he could dedicate himself to the science of mineralogy in 1796, he was appointed by Tsar Paul to perform military service in the home.

1800 Engelhardt was released from military service and decided shortly after the death of Tsar Paul to take a trip. During his stay in Livonia, Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy, he acquired knowledge of the mineralogy, chemistry and physics. From then undertook Engelhardt several research trips to geognostical study of rocks. He learned from Karl Georg Friedrich Parrot Raumer and know and worked with them. With Parrot he undertook 1811-1812 a research trip to the Crimea and the Caucasus.

1812 could be Engelhardt in Dorpat down and received in 1820 the professorship of mineralogy at the University of Dorpat. In the next few years he worked with the emergence of the Urals and presented numerous research papers.

At the age of 62 years Engelhardt died in his home town of Dorpat.
