The Moritzberg is a striking 603.5 m above sea level. NN witnesses high mountain in the Franconian Alb in the urban areas of running and Röthenbach and in the municipality of Leinburg in the Middle Franconian district of Nürnberger Land, Bavaria ( Germany ).

Geographical location

The wooded Moritz mountain rises 1.25 km east-southeast of Haimendorf, an east - southeastern district of Röthenbach. Meanwhile hamlet Moritzberg located on the summit plateau of the mountain. Geology

Sanctuary

The Moritz mountain is located in the western part of the company founded in 2001 and 172.21 square kilometers of protected landscape area "Southern Jura with Moritzberg and environment" ( LSG-Nr. 322 763 ).

Geotop

On the plateau of the summit there are numerous quarries and test pits, probably dating from the Bronze Age. Presumably Bohnerz were promoted. History

Prehistory

The now highly disturbed by medieval limestone and iron ore mining plateau -like summit of the mountain was inhabited in prehistoric times. Numerous reader finds that consist of ceramic fragments, stone tools, stone discounts and a spiral ring of bronze wire, evidence of the past. A first short-term colonization took place during the early Middle Stone Age (Mesolithic ), this field station was located on the ridge to the eastward subsequent 538.9 meters high mountain Reuther. Middle Ages

On the summit plateau of the mountain Moritz, built in 1419 and dedicated to St. Mauritius mountain chapel of St. Maurice is (or also known as Moritz mountain chapel ). After the construction of this chapel was originally designated as " Leinburg " mountain that gave its name to the lying at its foot community, renamed Moritzberg. Modern Times

1841 was the Bavarian King Ludwig I intend to build on the Moritzberg either the later addition of Kelheim Hall of Liberation or the Valhalla.
