Moroni (Arabic موروني, DMG Mūrūnī ) is the capital and with 60,200 inhabitants, the largest city in the Comoros.

The city is located on the west coast of the island Njazidja, which is also known by the French name of Grande Comore.

Infrastructure

Moroni has an international airport, the Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport, which is the hub of Air Comores International. Close to the city center is also located the small airfield Moroni Iconi. There is also a port with ferry connections to the African mainland and the other Comorian islands, Mwali (French Mohéli ) and Anjouan (French Anjouan ) and to Madagascar and other island states.

In Moroni, the Stade de Beaumer, the former national stadium of the Comoros, and is one of two Catholic church buildings located on the Islamic Comoros. The Comoro Parliament, the Central Bank and all ministries and departments of the Union have their headquarters in the city. History

Moroni was possibly founded by Arab settlers during the 10th century. Moroni was the capital of the Sultanate of Bambao. Since 1962, Moroni is the capital of the Comoros. On 20 December 2003, an agreement was signed in Moroni after the Civil War in the Comoros that free and democratic elections stipulates. Near the town is the Karthala volcano, the city overlaid when it erupted in late May 2006, a cloud of dust and smoke, which led to local evacuations. The city had about 23,400 inhabitants in 1990, 2003, approximately 60,200.
