Mors (island)

Mors (also Morsø or Morsland ) is an island in the Limfjord in northern Jutland. In the west and east, it is accessible via bridges, the north and south by ferry. The highest elevation ( Salgerhøj ) is 89 m high. Similar to the neighboring island of Fur has Mors occurrence of Moler.

Capital of the island is Nykøbing. It is the administrative seat of the commune Morsø. The island is 363.31 km ². In the Danish municipal reform on 1 January 2007 the municipality was to the non- Morsø still includes some smaller islands as Agerø, untouched, but now belongs instead to Viborg Amt for North Jutland.

The population declined in the years 1970-2013 from 25 029 to 21 163.

Natural Monuments

  • Legind / Hojris
  • The Hanklit is a 62 m high cliffs of the island of Mors. It consists of Moler, which is covered by Weichselian meltwater deposits. At the foot of the cliff, you can, among other fossils from the Cretaceous period found elsewhere (eg fossilized sea urchins and sponges ), although not from the Moler of the cliff.
  • The Salgjerhøj is 89 m, the highest peak on the island of Mors
  • Feggeklit is about 25 meters high and one kilometer long ridge on the north side of the island. The name goes back to King Fegge, a form of the Danish legends, which also occurs in Shakespeare's Hamlet ( Hamlet's uncle and stepfather ). Fegge is said to have lived here with his brother Horvendel a castle. The point at which the grave is to be located this king is marked with stones. However, archaeological evidence for the existence of a tomb at this site could not yet be provided. The hill is 1963 was a historical monument.

Culture

  • In Dueholm monastery in Nykøbing is the headquarters of the Historical Museum ( Morslands Historiske Museum ).
  • Jesperhus is Scandinavia's largest flower park, there are tropical plants, butterflies, fish, amphibians and birds issue. Attached is a holiday center with accommodation facilities, swimming pool and bowling alley.
  • Castle Højriis south of Nykøbing goes back to a medieval structure and received its present form in the 19th century.

Traffic

Across the island leads the highway Primærrute 26, which connects to the south Mors on the Sallingsundbroen with the Salling peninsula and in the north of the Vilsundbroen with Thy.
