Morta (mythology)

Morta is the Latinized name of the Greek goddess of fate Moira in Roman mythology.

In Livius Andronicus Odusia, a translation of the Odyssey of Homer into Latin, Morta is the one that predicts the death. That it is merely a translation for Moira at Morta was first noted by Aulus Gellius in the 2nd century and is considered both names for the same root word as backed up. The classification of Morta under the Parcae next Nona and Decima is considered as a construct of the lexicographers Caesellius Vindex, which has already been refuted by Gellius of Varro. Importance in the Roman religion is therefore not attributed to the Morta.
