Morton Gurtin

Edward Morton Gurtin ( born March 7, 1934 in Jersey City, New Jersey ) is an American engineer scientist for mechanics and materials science.

Gurtin studied Mechanical Engineering (Mechanical Engineering ) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor 's degree in 1955 and in 1961 from Brown University with Eli Sternberg PhD in Applied Mathematics ( Some theorem In The Theory Of Linear Elasticity ). Previously, he was 1955/56, an engineer at Douglas Aircraft from 1956 to 1959 and at General Electric. In 1962, he was Assistant Professor and later Associate Professor at Brown University, and from 1966 he was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

He has been a visiting professor in Glasgow, Strathclyde, Poitiers, Paris, Istanbul, Pisa, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, and at Simon Fraser University and was a consultant to the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories. In 1974 he was Guggenheim Fellow.

It dealt with the basics of nonlinear continuum mechanics and thermodynamics in connection to the investigation of Clifford Truesdell and Walter Noll, where he applied mathematical methods, for example, from the theory of dynamical systems and geometric measure theory. From the 1980s he focused on the dynamics of phase transitions of fracture dynamics, crystalline plasticity, diffusion at the atomic level and micromechanics, where he introduced non-classical macroscopic forces of configurations arise, for example, the kinetics of phase boundaries or from the microscopic description.

In 2004 he received the Timoshenko Medal. In 1994 he became an honorary doctorate from the University La Sapienza in Rome. In 2001 he received the Cataldo e Angiola Angostinelli price of the Accademia dei Lincei.
