Möðrudalur

Möðrudalur is a secluded farm in northeast Iceland.

Geography and description

It is located approximately in the middle between Egilsstaðir the east and the Lake Myvatn in the West. The farm with its meadows surrounded by the eponymous desert-like area Möðrudalsöræfi.

With 469 meters it is the highest altitude today permanently inhabited and working farm in the country. In high season ( May to September), there is an information and catering service operation for visitors. In the vicinity are the Herðubreið, the volcano Askja and the massif of Kverkfjöll

History

The farm has been inhabited since the settlement of Iceland. On his sheep is operated.

The small church has, built by farmer Jón Stefánsson A., the nearly 100 -year-old died in 1995 in memory of his wife in 1949 itself. Also, the altarpiece in the church he has painted by hand.

Until 2000, the Court was right on Hringvegur. Meanwhile, the piece of road No 1 to Möðrudalsleið (No. 901) has become (8 km from the Hringvegur ) and the Hringvegur continues north along.
