Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth varies greatly and can be 38-55 millimeters. They are characterized by a high degree of color variability. On the fore wings dominate whitish, gray and brownish tints. While the inner transverse line is smooth bent, showing the outer two outwardly directed projections. In Saumfeld a distinct white wave line can be seen, which continues on the hind wings. Specimens with almost black middle and light root and Saumfeld are called f conversaria, those with more or less strong darkening and only slightly recognizable drawing elements as f nigricata. The antennae of the males are combed on both sides, those of the females are thready.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

Adults caterpillars have a cylindrical shape, wrinkled at the sides, usually colored gray-brown and show a dark mottling or marbling. The very slim doll is brilliantly colored red-brown and has a forked tip on the cremaster.

Similar Species

  • Brownish colored moths resemble sometimes the moss green beef tensioner ( Deileptenia ribeata ( Clerck, 1759) ), but the strong projections of the outer shaft line is missing and has the most more rounded wing tips.
  • Craft Bergers beef tensioner ( Alcis bastelbergeri ( Hirschke, 1908) ) differs from the f conversaria by the smaller and weaker -lobed black midfield, which is particularly noticeable in the male moths.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the wavy lines beef tensioner extends through the whole of Europe to the Urals, in the south over the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, the Caucasus to Kazakhstan, and north to the Arctic Circle. In the Alps, he rises up to 1800 meters. The species inhabits deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests, bushy heaths, meadows, moorlands and settlement areas.

Way of life

The moths are mostly nocturnal and fly like artificial light sources, but also flowers of pipes grasses ( Molinia ), Greis herbs ( Senecio ) or snakes knotweed ( Polygonum bistorta ) to. Main flight period of the wavy lines beef tensioner are the months of May to August. The caterpillars live in late summer polyphagous on a wide variety of shrubs and low plants, so that they are sometimes referred to as " omnivores ."
