Mount Chiginagak

The Mount Chiginagak is an active stratovolcano of the Aleutian Island chain, about 15 km northwest of the Chiginagak Bay.

The volcano is located about 600 miles from Anchorage and is therefore not monitored continuously. Its last eruption took place in 1998.

Acid lake

In May 2005 the volcano defoliated the environment. Scientists were able to reconstruct the basis of the found evidence the following course of action: Yet in November 2004, satellite images showed a continuous blanket of snow. Following those volcanic heat and sulfur fumes a crater 400 meters in diameter occur, filled with sulfuric acid. In May 2005, the sea broke through the crater wall and 4 million cubic meters of sulfuric acid flows up into the 27 km from Mother Goose Lake. All life in the sea died. In August 2005, a pH of 3.2 was measured in the lake yet. In addition to the sulfurous acid and fog, the plant was built on an area of ​​30 km2 and killed up to 150 m rose above the valley floor.

There are about 15 other volcanoes with acid lakes known, such as the Poás and Rincón de la Vieja in Costa Rica.
