The Gamkonora, Indonesian Gunung Gamkonora, is an active volcano in the north of the Indonesian island of Halmahera, which belongs to the province of Maluku Utara. It is at an altitude of 1635 m, the highest peak on the island of Halmahera. The Gamkonora is a stratovolcano; he has produced an elongated series of craters along the north - Südspalte.

Eruptions

The biggest eruption in 1673 was accompanied by a tsunami that flooded the nearby villages. In the 20th century there were on average about every 10 years to an eruption of the volcano. On 10 July 2007, the volcano erupted again. Around 8,000 people left their homes near the volcano after fire and a three- mile-high cloud of ash could be seen.
