The external appearance of the volcano is impressive, because the majority of its summit is a very large, trough-shaped caldera taken, which was created by the collapse of the emptied after the recent eruption about 11 million years ago, magma chamber. This today is filled mostly with ice.

Mount Hampton is the northernmost of the extinct volcanoes which together form the Executive Committee Range. He was discovered by the United States Antarctic Service USAS, the predecessor of today's USAP on December 15, 1940 during a flight. It was named after Ruth Hampton, an employee at the U.S. Department of the Interior and member of the " Executive Committee " of the USAS.
