Mount Keira

Mount Keira is a mountain 4 km northwest of the Australian city of Wollongong in New South Wales. It has a height of 469 meters and is known for its striking form and its history in coal mining in the area. Here was mined from 1857 to 1991 coal. Mount Keira emerged as the right 60 to 80 million years ago formed by folds of the earth's crust, the Illawarra escarpment.

Keira is a designation of the Aborigines for a large lagoon or a high mountain. The Aborigines called themselves the mountain Djera what as much as turkey means.

Mount Keira also referred to a district of Wollongong which includes the summit and the southern flank of the mountain.
