Illawarra

Illawarra is a region in the Australian state of New South Wales. The coastal region is located south of Sydney and adjoins the south of their region Shoalhaven. It includes the cities of Wollongong and Shellharbour and the town of Kiama.

The word Illawarra probably means " high place near the sea" in the local language of the indigenous people.

The traditional main industries of the area are agriculture, coal mining and steel production. Australia's largest steel factory BlueScope Steel at Port Kembla. The area, especially around Port Kembla and Wollongong was known for many industrial jobs, but since 1990, the service sector is gaining in importance.

Traffic

The Illawarra region is connected by several passes and the Southern Freeway and an electrified railway with Sydney. Furthermore, the west by the Illawarra Illawarra Highway and Picton Road, connected to the Princes Highway in the south. In Albion Park there is a regional airport.

Illawarra is managed by the four municipal councils of Wollongong City, Shellharbour City, Kiama Municipality and partially Shoalhaven City. Wollongong is the northernmost municipality, it ranges from Helensburgh to Lake Illawarra, with the northernmost coastal town of Stanwell Park and the southern suburbs Windang, Yallah and Haywards Bay. Shellharbour, south of Wollongong and extends north from the south coast of Lake Illawarra to the Minnamurra River to the south. The Kiama Municipality is bordered to the north by the Minnamurra River and includes all areas south of Gerroa to about 4 km. The Shoalhaven City Council comprises the south in the areas of the Illawarra region to Ulladulla.

Population

In 2004, the Illawarraregion had 409 734 inhabitants.

Sports

The Illawarra Steelers Rugby League Football Club played in the New South Wales Rugby League Football Competition, then from 1982 to 1998 in the National Rugby League, and currently forms half of the joint venture St George Illawarra Dragons. There are many sports facilities in the Illawarra and many famous football stars like Trent Barrett come from there.
