Mount Meakan

The Meakan - dake (Japanese雌 阿寒岳, literally " female Akan Summit ") is a 1499 m high active volcano in Hokkaido in Japan. It is located in the district of Akan -chō in the north of the city of Kushiro in Hokkaido Prefecture.

The stratovolcano was built in the southwest of the 13 to 24 kilometer Akan caldera. Also within the caldera are the 1476 m high Akan -Fuji (阿寒富 士) immediately south of Meakan and the 1371 m high Oakan -dake (雄 阿寒岳, " male Akan Summit " ) in the northeast. Between Meakan and Oakan the Lake Akan is.

In historical times the Meakan with weak outbreaks was from the volcanoes within the caldera only active. In the last eruption in November 2008, there were minor phreatic eruptions.

The Meakan -dake is one of the 100 famous mountains in Japan and is together with the Lake Akan Akan National Park. This secluded, spacious and almost inaccessible area is opened up especially around the Lake Akan as a recreation area for Onsen guests, hikers and campers.
