The Gunung Papandayan ( Indonesian Gunung = "mountain" ) is a stratovolcano in Indonesia. It has a height of about 2665 m and is one of the most active volcanoes in the country.

General Information

Indonesia has the world's highest density of volcanoes and is part of the so -called " Pacific Ring of Fire ." The Ring of Fire is a vast area in the Pacific Ocean with regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are 128 active volcanoes of which 65 were classified as hazardous.

The Eventhough located on the Indonesian island of Java in the West Java province, 47 km south of the provincial capital of Bandung in a densely populated area. He has an up to 1.8 km wide caldera, in which there are several younger and older craters.

Eruptions

The first eruption in recorded history in 1772 the northeast flank collapsed. By doing resulting landslide 40 villages were destroyed and killed nearly 3,000 people.

Further eruptions took place in 1923 and 1942.

The last eruption took place in November and December 2002. Here, on the east side of the volcano, large areas of forest were destroyed by phreatic eruptions.

Recent Activity

Since 4 August 2007, the Eventhough again shows increased activity. On 13 August 2011, the status was raised to level III ( Increased readiness ) and the area for strangers locked.
