Mount Saint Peter

The St Pieter is a high plateau near the Dutch city of Maastricht. Under him there are huge limestone mines. The natural mountain is 107 meters above Normal Amsterdam Level, its created by a nahbeigelegenen monastery of people tip D'n Observant reaches 171 meters in height. It offers a good view of the city and the Meuse and Jekertal. On the plateau in the wooded area of Slavante and ENCI forest can go for a hike. The St. Pieter Berg is a nature reserve.

Inside the mountain, there is a 200 km wide labyrinth, which was created artificially. Some mines are indeed much larger than that of St. Pieter Berg, but hardly any other has an equally interesting historical background. The currently existing labyrinth was built in 800 years of craftsmanship with a wide variety of hand tools. The mountain was not only used for building material production, but also as a military hospital, bunkers and hiding valuable objects and art treasures during the German occupation. One can discover monuments and sculptures on the walls of the corridors.

During the Cold War was in the mountain, in addition to other military agencies, the War Headquarters ( WarHQ ) of the Northern Army Group ( NORTHAG ).
