Gunung Salak

The Salak is a 2211 -meter-high stratovolcano in the province of West Java on the Indonesian island of Java. He was at the northeast end of a row of older, eroded volcanoes. In the summit area two craters are present, several secondary craters are located at Südösthang and at the northern foot. In historical times there were several times phreatic explosions in an area of ​​solfataras on the western slope of Salak. The last eruption was in 1938. Origin of the name

According to popular belief, the name comes " Salak " from the eponymous fruit of Salakpalme, a tropical fruit with flaky skin.

After the Sundanese tradition the name comes from the Sanskrit word " Salaka " was derived, meaning ' silver '. The term " Gunung " is commonly used in the Indonesian language as an additional designation of Bergen. As a result, the name " Gunung Salak " translated " Silver Mountain".

Aircraft accidents

The Gunung Salak has already been referred to in the national newspapers as the " boneyard ".
