The Shishaldin

The Shishaldin is a stratovolcano located almost in the center of Unimak Iceland in the eastern Aleutian Islands. The nearest town is False Pass, 32 km north-east of the volcano.

Peak height and Name

Its symmetrical cone reaches a peak altitude of 2857 m, which he has the highest peak of the island chain. The original name was Sisquk the volcano awarded by the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands and means "the mountain, showing me the way when I 'm lost "

Eruptions

A small summit crater produced consistently a small but intense cloud of steam and occasionally some ash. Not less than 24 parasitic crater sit on his flanks.

Shishaldin is one of the most active volcanoes in the Aleutian island arc of at least 27 eruptions since 1775. The last eruption phase took place in 2004. The eruptions are often explosive, but also strombolian activity occurs. The flank craters have spawned numerous lava flows.

Conservation

1967 Shishaldin was designated as a National Natural Landmark.
