Mozes en Aäronkerk (Amsterdam)

The Mozes en Aäronkerk (Moses and Aaron Church - officially, St. Anthony Church) is a Roman Catholic church at the Waterlooplein in Amsterdam, which is now used mainly as an event center.

History

In the first centuries after the Reformation public Roman Catholic church in Amsterdam was forbidden. Since 1649 held Franciscan ( OFM) in a converted house church community center, the St.. Mass; soon the house next door was included. This pair of houses was named after the Old Testament brothers Moyses s Aäron; the name was transferred to the house church and its Nachfolgebauten and displaced popularly Anthony's patronage.

The house church was enlarged in the 17th and 18th centuries, both an architectural, but remained turmlos and hidden behind the two houses gables. It was not until the turn of the 19th century the limitations of the Catholic cult have been lifted, the Franciscans were planning a prestigious new building on the same site, which could be realized from 1837 to 1841 as Water State Church, designed by Tieleman Franciscus Suys.

Building

The church is a neo-classical three-aisled hall church with a recessed rectangular choir. The brick building is a portal front of bright stone purposed along the lines of an ancient temple, the first carrying a statue of Christ blessing; on either side are two storey lantern towers. Even the chorus is clad on the outside with a bright antikisierenden gable.

Equipment

The completely decorated in white interior is dominated by a large Baroque altar, which dates back to the previous building.

Organ

The organ was built by the brothers Adema ( Leeuwarden ) built in 1871 in 1871. Some pipes were here supplied by the organ builder Cavaillé Coll. The instrument was last restored in 1993-1994 by the organ builder Flentrop. The instrument has 48 registers on three manuals and pedal. Each individual work is divided in basic votes and combination Register.
