Mozilla Sunbird

Mozilla Sunbird was an independent, platform-independent personal information manager software ( PIM software ) from the Mozilla project. It originated as part of Mozilla Calendar project, which also houses the Lightning Thunderbird extension has been developed. Sunbird used since version 0.3a1 an SQLite database for internal storage of calendar data, but also supports the iCalendar standard for saving and loading of external calendars. There are other import and export filters for various other file formats.

The development should ultimately support both the Mozilla Firefox browser and the email client Mozilla Thunderbird and thus further contributed to a complete open source alternative to Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook, but also to the along with Mac OS X (Apple) sold programs Apple Mail, Address Book and iCal.

The development of Sunbird as a standalone program was officially discontinued in early 2010. The version published in January 2010 Sunbird 1.0 beta1 is the last official release of the Mozilla Calendar Project. In the official announcement of the project it is recommended that future Lightning to use based on Thunderbird version 3. A continuation of the development of Sunbird as a stand alone application is therefore to be expected at best outside of the Mozilla project. The project name Sunbird was thus maintained against interim presumptions until the discontinuation of the project.

Development

Sunbird was according to the official version until recently in the development phase, as never officially a productive version was released. The developers recommended despite the actual maturity of the software only a test application. The development of the current version was severely delayed: The last version before the current version, version 0.9, was released on 23 September 2008 and was already used in many different languages, including German, available. The 1.0 version was announced for early 2009, but appeared only in 2010 with over a year late and only as a beta version.

Beginning of April 2009 it was announced that the calendar project is canceled in favor of Thunderbird extension Lightning. With the latest version of Sunbird 1.0 Beta 1, the project is officially over. For the Windows platform, this version is published "unsigned " branch of the binary repositories of the Mozilla Foundation only
