MPI MPXpress

MPXpress is a series of diesel-electric passenger train locomotives designed for the transport. The manufacturer, Motive Power, Inc. offers the locomotives with various options such as different main engines and propulsion engines, power generation via a separate auxiliary engine or the main motor and new or revised bogies. Currently, MPI offers three main variants: MP36PH - 3S, MP36PH -3C, and MP40PH - 3C.

The MPXpress locomotives were the first standard passenger locomotives that met the EPA Tier 1 and Tier 2 emission regulations and the safety provisions of the FRA ( Federal Railroad Administration ) in terms of crash behavior and fire safety. The series also meets the crash standards of APTA ( American Public Transportation Association ).

Several transit agencies in Canada and the U.S. have ordered MPXpress locomotives for their transport networks.

The MBTA of Boston has become the new model locomotive HSP46 ordered from Motive Power for delivery from 2012. The HSP46 is intended to meet EPA Tier 3 emission regulations.

Models

MP36PH -3S

The MP36PH -3S has as its main engine a 16 -cylinder diesel engine of the type MPI 645F3B. The generator to power the train line is directly connected to the main motor (hence the " S" for static in the model designation ). When providing full electrical power for the connected passenger coaches, the main engine must run at a higher speed to power the passenger cars. The tensile force is in the provision of the full power of 500 kW on the train line only 2200 kW, since the power generation performance diverges from the main engine.

Chicago's Metra has made 27 of these locomotives in the years 2003 to 2004 service. 14 of them older locomotives EMD F40C have replaced, while the remaining enlarged the fleet. As the locomotives were delivered, they showed software and computer problems, to the point that Metra had to put it into operation in 2004 for a short time two F40C again. One of the unique features of the MP36 in the Metra fleet compared to other operators is the equipment with a Gyralite ( circular warning light ), which is attached to the place where the Zugnummernschild would otherwise be appropriate. Metra is currently the only operator of MP36PH -3S.

MP36PH -3C

The MP36PH -3C has the same main motor as the " 3S " model, the MPI 645F3B diesel engine, but the generator to the train bus bar is driven via its own C-18 Caterpillar diesel engine. Therefore, the "C" in the model designation. In this configuration, the entire power of the main engine of 2700 kW for the drive available and it can go as needed to idle. Caltrain was the first railway company, which has bought the MP36PH -3C in 2003.

The version of SunRail will be clearly different from the standard versions. The modernized locomotives will indeed have the same cab as the other locomotives, but behind a small locomotive body with exterior walkways, as they are common in many American Lokmodellen.

MP40PH -3C

3C corresponds to the MP40PH MP36PH -3C except for the following differences:

  • The MP40PH -3C uses a 16-cylinder EMD 710GB diesel engine instead of the MPI 645F3B which generates 3000 kW instead of 2700 kW.
  • The use of EMD 's EM2000 control system instead of Wabtec / MPI ' s own system as in the MP36.
  • The installation of AC generators and propulsion engines on EMD.

GO Transit has 27 locomotives of this model orders, which were delivered between 2007 and 2008. An order for a further 20 units was signed in July 2008. These are currently being delivered. In February 2010, a further order for 10 additional units was granted. In March 2011, GO Transit has received a financing commitment for an additional 20 units. Including all options will include their fleet up to 77 locomotives of this model.

On November 1, 2011 it was announced that GO Transit will replace the drive motors of EMD in 11 MP40 by new Cummins QSK95 engines of the type. At present it is still unclear whether the engine exchange program is also on the remaining locomotives that are still relatively new, expanded.

While GO Transit currently the only operator is still this Lokmodells, Sound Transit has placed an order for three locomotives for use on their Sounder transport line.
