MS Jutlandia

The Jutlandia as a hospital ship

The motor vessel Jutlandia (Latin: Jutland ) was a 1934 -built passenger and cargo ship of the Danish shipping company Det Østasiatiske Kompagni ( East Asiatic Company). It became known particularly as a hospital ship during the Korean War.

History

On behalf of the United Nations and the Red Cross, the Jutlandia was used from 1951 to 1953 as a civilian hospital ship during the Korean War. The Danish government was responsible for the conversion into a modern hospital ship, so that four operating rooms and 356 hospital beds were available. On a total of three trips, the ship was used. In the meantime, the ship with air conditioning, an eye clinic and a helicopter deck was adjusted to the requirements of humanitarian action. In contrast to the military hospital ships and civilian Korean patients were on the Jutlandia supplies, so that in addition to 4981 soldiers probably far more than 6000 civilians were treated. On October 16, 1953, the Jutlandia ran 999 days in UN service again in Copenhagen in order to henceforth be reinstated by the EAC. On 14 January 1965 she left Copenhagen for their last trip to Bilbao, where she was scrapped.

After the ship slowly sank into oblivion, concluded his story by the Danish singer Kim Larsen and his hit Jutlandia (1986 ) back into the public consciousness.
