The Volendam is a passenger ship of the American cruise line Holland America Line. It was built in Italy at the Fincantieri shipyard and sailing under the flag of the Netherlands. Captain is (as of Jan 2010), who was born in Nigeria Dutchman Peter Bos. The Volendam is a sister ship of Amsterdam, Zaandam and Rotterdam.

History

Today's motor ship Volendam is the third ship of the Holland America Line, which bears the name of the North Dutch tourist village. The previous two were the steamships Volendam (I) and Volendam (II).

The first Volendam ( 15,534 GRT) was built in 1922 by Harland & Wolff shipyard, and was until 1951 in service. With the black hull and the vertical drop of the bow, she looked like a miniature Titanic. She had two chimneys and in front and behind a derrick.

The second Volendam was founded in 1958 as Brasil ( 14,984 GRT), built for the American shipping company Moore - McCormack. 1972 bought the ship, renamed, and it rebuilt in the Lloyd -Werft in Bremen Holland- America Line. In 1975 the ship was delivered to the Monarch Cruise Lines and renamed Monarch Sun. The ship was renamed several times after that and finally scrapped in late 2004.

Technology

Like all modern cruise ships, the Volendam a diesel-electric drive. Five V12 diesel engines with nearly 58,000 hp together to drive generators to produce electricity. The fuel consumption is indicated by the shipping company with 85 gallons per nautical mile, the tanks hold a total of 860,000 gallons. The two propeller shafts are driven by ABB electric motors, which make each 17,500 hp. For maneuvering are installed at the bow and stern each two cross beam control systems, each of which is powered by a 2,550 hp electric motor.
