Mudskipper

Mudskipper ( Periophthalmus modestus )

The Mudskipper relatives ( Oxudercinae ), formerly Periophthaminae, are a subfamily of gobies ( Gobiidae ). The pectoral fins are very muscular approach and can be used as a means of transportation on land

Occurrence

They live in estuaries and tidal range in the Red Sea and tropical Indo-Pacific, from East Africa to northern Australia and Samoa. A few species are also found on the coasts of Korea and southern Japan. One type, the Atlantic mudskipper ( Periophthalmus barbarus ) lives on the coast of West Africa from Angola to Senegal.

Way of life

Oxudercinae amphibious life in salt water or brackish water. Only a few species go up the rivers into fresh water. While the Mudskipper ( Periophthalmus ) prefer to stay on land, in the wet mud and mangrove roots and jump at the onset of flooding inland, the other genera usually stay in the water and bounce just short of a tide pool to the next. The fish are revier forming and defend small territories or pond against rivals.

They are depending on the nature 5 to 27 inches long.
