Muhtar (title)

A Muhtar in Turkey is the head of a village community ( village headman ) or a person with some governmental functions in a district of a city ( mayor ). He is elected directly by the citizens of the village or the local part. His term of office is five years. The Muhtar performs tasks of public administration. This includes tasks of health, order, stand, construction and registration office. He settles dispute and pays attention to the public order. He is assisted by a so-called Elders ( ihtiyar heyeti ), the elected members and the village schoolmaster and the local Imam belong as "natural members". The Muhtar of the village generally has more powers and duties as the Muhtar in a district of a city.

The Muhtar is the Vali or the Kaymakam assumed.
