Mul Mantar

The Mul Mantar ( Punjabi: ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ, German: root mantra; anglisierende spelling " Mool Mantra " ) consists of the first lines of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism. According to tradition, it is said to have been uttered by Guru Nanak, after he awoke from a three-day deep trance underwater to enlightenment. The Mul Mantar is considered to be the essence of the spiritual teachings of Sikhism. The entire Guru Granth Sahib is z.T. interpreted as the interpretation of the Mul Mantar.

The Mul Mantar consists of the following words:

Ek Ong Kaar, Sat Nam, Karta Purkh, Nirbhao, Nirvair, Akal Murat, Ajuni Saibhang, Gurprasaad. Jap. Aad Sach, Jugaad Sach, Haibhi Sach, Nanak Hosi Bhisach.

Translated it means something like: God is One without contrast, He / She is the creator, true is his / her name, the creator of all that is, he / she is without fear, without enmity, timeless is his / her form, beyond of birth and death, being by itself, understood by the grace of the Guru, meditate on this name, it is true before the ages, true at the beginning of the ages, true now, Guru Nanak says it's true in the future ( for always true ).

In Punjabi the word God has no gender, so that the deity is neither male nor intended to be a female.

The Mul Mantar is used for japa meditation.
