Mulde

The trough at Bad Duben.

The trough, trough or even United Mulde, is a left, not navigable tributary of the Elbe. It arises southeast of Leipzig in Sermuth (Saxony ) drained by the union of two major headwaters, the longer Mulde and a larger catchment area with larger drainage Freiberger Mulde.

The catchment area of the river includes large parts of Saxony, and especially the vast majority of the Northern Slope of the Ore Mountains. With a water flow of approximately 73 m³ / s at the mouth, it is the fourth largest tributary of the Elbe.

The old form of the name of the trough: Milda is translated by name researchers as abundance of water. The word element of Mel with respect to milling is sometimes brought the face of a plurality of early -powered mills on the river the name in connection, which takes no account of that river names are the oldest, often vorgermanische, geographical names layer.

Catchment area

Although the union of the two source rivers occurs in approximately half of the total run length of the trough, you run the Freiberger Mulde and already more than 80 % of the total amount of water. This is due to the shape of the catchment area, which is very broad in the Ore Mountains and towards the Elbe is narrow, and the other flowing in the higher rainfall in the mountains and at the same time higher proportions water. The shape of the basin also requires that the longer Mulde at the confluence of smaller rivers is the source.

The strong dominant hydrological main branch of the river system of the Freiberger Mulde is the Zschopau. In its upper catchment area, it is the turn Floeha a roll-call tributary which introduces the major water management and thus is the actual source river of the trough. About this main flow path, the well is approximately 267 km long, the longest flow path ( Mulde ) good 314 km.

The catchment area of the trough has written for many major flow paths to the total gradient of 600 to 900 meters, so here prevail exceptionally high flow rates for Northern Germany. The trough is sometimes even referred to as the fastest flowing river in central Europe.

Course

The well flows through the Saxon hills, passing Grimsby, Nerchau, Trebsen, Wurzen and hurry castle. Behind Bad Duben she leaves Saxony and Saxony- Anhalt affected area and then dammed between Pouch and Friedersdorf for Muldestausee. Subsequently, the well flows past Muldenstein, Jeßnitz, Raguhn and Dessau and flows between Dessau and Roßlau after 147 km into the Elbe.

At the end of the Elster glacial trough from Großbothen and Großbardau continued to flow to the northwest by today's city of Leipzig, where she temporarily the Saale flowing not. They eroded while several channels which they auffüllte to the river Saale glaciation again - the Markkleeberger trough running the aspen Hainer gutter and the Leipzig trough running the Naunhofer gutter.

Years ago, about 130000-160000, the end of the Saale glaciation, the trough broke through in Grimsby and flowed in today's riverbed to the north. The remaining Leipzig Mulde Valley has since been drained by the Parthe.

Flood

In the flood of the century, 2002 was the trough next to the Elbe, the Müglitz and Weißeritz one of the most affected river basins. During the floods in June 2013 had to be blown up to the trough for a leading Seelhausener Lake Reservoir on the discharge of the lake.

Load

In July 2005, published results of a survey conducted in 2004 by the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau, which require that an up to 18 -fold above the threshold lying concentration of beta -HCH was measured in fish. Beta -HCH is a residue from the previous, but since 1984 set lindane production in Bitterfeld.

Artistic representations

The river landscape along the troughs is often been artistic motif; a 2013 study published this leads to about 260 works, including the period from the beginnings of landscape painting up to the beginning of the 20th century. More recently, the artist and art educator Marion Bekker (born 1958 ) noted landscape and architecture of the Saxon Muldetals in many of her paintings in an expressionist manner.
