Mullet Peninsula

Geographical location

The Mullet Peninsula (Irish: An Muirthead ) is located in the Barony of Erris, in the extreme northwest of County Mayo in Ireland. It is 33 km long and apart from the constriction (up to 400 m) at the Elly Bay, 12 km wide. The Peninsula ( the mullet engl. Mullet ) is Gaeltacht area with a rich heritage of traditional music.

The highest elevation in the south is the 105 m high Termon Hill ( Irish: Cnoc an Tearmainn ), near which village case More ( also digested More, Irish An FAL Mór ) St. Deirbhile 's church ( National Monument ) with its Romanesque portal and the sacred fountain. In the north of the 138 m high Tower Hill is the end point of the peninsula. At the 1.7 km wide isthmus of Belmullet ( Béal an Irish Mhuirthead ), the only large town in the region ( 1,200 inhabitants ), leads to the peninsula. The coastline on the Atlantic side is almost uninhabited and vegetationsarm. In the southeast at Blacksod Point (An Fod Dubh ) has a view of the cliffs of Achill Iceland.

The peninsula is popular with anglers and ornithologists ( snowy owls at Termon Hill ). The upstream Inishkea Islands are a well known bird sanctuary.
