Belmullet

Belmullet ( Béal an Mhuirthead Irish ) is a town in Ireland. It is located in the west of County Mayo in the province of Connacht, at the entrance of the peninsula Mullet. Belmullet is situated in a Gaeltacht region so that Béal the official name of the place is to Mhuirthead. In the town of 954 inhabitants ( 2006).

History

Belmullet was founded in 1715 by Sir Arthur Shaen. For drainage of the marsh he had to create a channel, which could then also operate small boats between the Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay. Early 19th century, took over William Henry Carter a large portion of land ownership. Under his administration the road was created to Castlebar and built a pier for boats up to 100 tons. A result, the city developed positively, so that in 1832 a Catholic and a Protestant church was built in 1857. 1847 took a fish processing company on its production.

Economy

In 1996, a natural gas was discovered off the coast. For the efficient use of the occurrence of the construction of a refinery and pipeline is planned. (see also: Corrib gas project )
