Muñoz Gamero Peninsula

Geographical location

The Muñoz - Gamero Peninsula (Spanish Península Muñoz Gamero ) is a large peninsula in southern Chile. It belongs to the Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena de la ( Región XII), where the northern part falls into the Última Esperanza Province and the southern part of the province of Magallanes. It is named after the peninsula Benjamín Muñoz Gamero (1817 - 1851), a Chilean military and politicians.

Geography

The Muñoz - Gamero Peninsula in the east over a just 4 km wide isthmus ( at 52 ° 30 ' 21 " S, 72 ° 35' 7" W 52.505833333333 72.585277777778 - ) to the southwest of the Patagonian mainland. In the southwest they cross the Magellan Strait, to the west by the Smyth Channel and south-east of it lies the island Riesco, from which it is separated only by a very narrow strait. By 1904 Riesco was even still as a part of the peninsula. The peninsula itself is heavily rutted by fjords and bays and, in turn, divided into numerous peninsulas. The most striking point is the 1495 m high stratovolcano Mount Burney in the north of the peninsula. To the south lies the 200 km ² large glaciers Gran Campo Nevado field and in the center of the peninsula there is a lake discovered only in 1945.
