Muntplein, Amsterdam

The Muntplein in the city center of Amsterdam is a place ( Plein ) and of busy intersection. It consists mainly of a wide bridge that crosses the Singel the Amstel.

History

Between 1865 and 1877 many houses were demolished to enlarge the bridge or the Muntplein in the area. Meanwhile, it is the widest bridge in Amsterdam.

In the 19th century it was called the place " Schapen Plein " (sheep square). With the obstruction of the bridge, the name was changed to " Sophia Square ", named after Queen Sophie of Württemberg ( 1818-1877 ). Popularly called the place " Muntplein " or simply " de Munt ". In 1917 this designation was the official name .. On the Muntplein the Munt Tower stands (literally: Mint Tower ), with a height of 41 meters. 1938/1939 at an obstruction of the tower a pedestrian crossing was installed.

The Muntplein is a very busy crossing point for trams, cars, bikes and pedestrians. The tram lines No. 4, 9, 14, 16, 24 and 25 have a stop at Muntplein. From the bridge is 700 meters from the Dam, 800 m to the Nieuwmarkt, 300 m from the Rembrandtplein and 300 m to the Spui.
