Rembrandtplein

Rembrandt Square is a great place in Amsterdam in 1876 was named after the painter Rembrandt van Rijn.

History

The place was once the butter market in Amsterdam. 1852 here was in the presence of King William III. a statue of Rembrandt reveals and 1876 then changed the name of the square of Botermarkt in Rembrandtplein. After the Second World War, the place became the center of the nightlife with the opening of various hotels and cafes.

Since Rembrandt's 400th anniversary 2006-2009 were in the middle of the square in front of the Rembrandt monument several smaller statues, " The Night Watch " represented the famous painting of Rembrandt.

Importance

In blocks of houses around the square there are bars, restaurants and some great discos. The place is very popular with tourists and Dutch. The popularity of Rembrandtplein increases with the café terraces in the summer. The largest building on the square is (later ABN AMRO become ) the headquarters of the former Amsterdamsche Bank.

Geography

Rembrandtplein is connected by road with the Reguliersbreestraat Muntplein. About the Blauwbrug leads off the Amstelstraat over the Amstel. The place Thorbeckeplein (named after Johan Rudolf Thorbecke ) is located south where it goes to the Herengracht.

Special

On Rembrandtplein is Europe's largest LCD screen is from an amount of 7.6 to 15 meters. With the screen pedestrians can interact via a Bluetooth -enabled cell phone. The square is bordered by the Reguliers where the gay community is represented mainly in Amsterdam. From Rembrandtplein to the popular Flower Market ( Flower Market ), there are approximately 230 meters. Nearby is the Museum of Bags and Purses Tassenmuseum.
