Bloemenmarkt

The Flower Market ( German: flower market ) is the most famous market in the center of Amsterdam ( North Holland ) for a diverse and wide range of plants and flowers.

History

Until 1862, the flower market had its stand at " Sint Lucionwal ". After the channel Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was drained in 1883, the market got its present stand on the Singel, between the Koningsplein and the Muntplein. At this time the market was "Trees and plants Mark " ( Bomem -en plans market ). In the 19th century, the flower sellers drove with boats on the Amstel and sold their goods directly from the boat.

Even today, the market stalls are located on ( fixed ) boats. The official name is now " Drijfende Flower Market " (literally: drifting flower market ) and the market is open daily. The market is located approximately 230 meters from Rembrandtplein and 800 meters from Leidseplein. In recent decades, the Flower Market was mainly an attraction for tourists. The Classic range is adjusted accordingly. In addition to ornamental and cut flower many varieties of bulbs and souvenirs are available.
