Muriel Barbery

Muriel Barbery ( born May 28, 1969 in Casablanca, Morocco ) is a French philosophy professor and writer.

Life

Muriel Barbery graduated from the École Normale Supérieure, a Parisian elite university, and taught philosophy at IUFMs, Institut universitaire de formation of maîtres, of Saint- Lô.

In 2000 she sent by post, at the urging of her husband Stéphane, a psychologist, the manuscript of her first novel at Éditions Gallimard. The novel about a virtuoso food critic has been translated into 14 languages.

Her second novel, The Elegance of the Hedgehog was released in 2006 at the same publishing house and was with over 700,000 copies sold and with 31 translations a huge commercial success and literary bestseller in France in 2007. The German -language translation, which was advancing in 2008 to No. 5 on the Spiegel bestseller list, came in January 2009 in the 10th edition in bookstores.

For both novels, the author was awarded numerous prizes.

Muriel Barbery, however, eluded all bestsellers hype: The success of the second novel allowed her financially to take leave: it is pulled until further notice to Japan and currently lives in Kyoto.
