Museum für angewandte Kunst Frankfurt

The Museum of Applied Arts (until 2012 Museum of Applied Arts Frankfurt) is a museum of art, crafts and design at the Museum Embankment in Frankfurt am Main.

Architecture

The museum building was designed by the American architect Richard Meier. It was built in 1985 in the park of Villa Metzler, the Metzler Park today. This villa is also part of the museum. His design was chosen because he spared the trees of the park and the villa integrated into the overall concept. The three interconnected white cubes of the new building are modeled on the proportions of classical villa of the museum. A glazed transition to the first floor connects the new building with the back of the villa. The premises of the Richard Meier - building were adjusted by static display fixtures. Whole window and patio doors were closed to protect the collection objects. 2013, the Richard Meier Building of the Museum of Applied Art was restored to its original state, 27 years after its construction. All barriers have been removed, open sightlines and vistas again, the transparency of the building restored. In the modified foyer is a museum shop and a bistro on the second floor.

Museum Park

The museum park was also designed by Meier. It is located between Schaumainkai and Metzler Road ( north-south). The park extends, with its green space, from the Museum of World Cultures to the Museum of Applied Art (West -East). Its special feature is a rectangular, cross-shaped walkway to connect the two roads and the two museums, as well as a white fountain at its intersection axis. 2013, the park was renamed " Metzler Park".

History

1877 submitted to the Central German Kunstgewerbeverein the ground floor of the museum collection.

The city of Frankfurt took over the collection of the association in 1921 and created a few years later from the Museum of Arts and Crafts. Because of the destroyed in the Second World War the collection premises had to be stored and found again only in 1966 an exhibition opportunity at the Villa Metzler. In January 2000, the museum was renamed Museum of Applied Arts in Frankfurt. Since its reopening after an interior renovation from December 2012 to April 2013, it bears the name of Museum of Applied Arts.

Collection

The museum's collection includes about 65,000 works from five millennia. Its focus is on European art, crafts and design from the 12th to the 21st century. Other priorities include book art and graphic Islamic and East Asian art.

The Historic Villa Metzler

The 2008 renovated and re- decorated Historic Villa Metzler is part of the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt and served Richard Meier as the starting point of proportion and scale of the new building from 1985.
