Museumsufer

As a museum, the banks of the location of a group of 15 museums is referred to in Frankfurt am Main, which are all located in the immediate vicinity of the Main.

History

The idea for the collection of different museums had in 1977, the then Frankfurt Cultural Affairs Hilmar Hoffmann promoted in the local election campaign, after proposals had already been developed earlier in the art. So already the architect Till Behrens " greenbelt Main bank " concept had to be incorporated into the 1973 Frankfurt Forum for Urban Development. Between 1980 and 1990, existing museums were expanded and built new ones. Partial former patrician villas have been converted or designed new buildings. For the designs architects such as Richard Meier, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Josef Paul Kleihues, Günter Behnisch and Hans Hollein were responsible.

Since 2008, renovated and expanded the city some of its museums. The Städel received an extension. In addition, the film museum was renovated. The old buildings of the Historical Museum have already been reopened. Work on other museums are still pending [ deprecated].

In October 2007, some 30 museums in Frankfurt closed under the word and figurative mark " Musemumsuferfrankfurt " together. This will be similar to " MQ " for the Museum Quarter in Vienna or the " Museum Island " in Berlin is an established concept for the Museum Frankfurt. The logo symbolizes the seven bridges that span the banks of the Main Museum. With the " Museum Embankment ticket " and the " Museum Embankment Card" of the composite provides benefits in the 34 participating museums.

Museums

Nine museums lined up on the south bank of the River Main in Sachsenhausen between the Iron Bridge and the Peace Bridge on Schaumainkai. These are, down the Main enumerated:

  • Frankfurt Icon Museum ( Bridge Street / German Mr Ufer)
  • Museum of Applied Art (formerly the Museum of Arts and Crafts ) with the Villa Metzler
  • World Cultures Museum (formerly the Museum of Ethnology and the Museum of World Cultures)
  • German Film Museum
  • German Architecture Museum
  • Museum of Communication (formerly the Federal Postal Museum )
  • Städel
  • Liebighaus ( museum of old plastic)
  • Museum Giersch (Museum of Art in the region)

On the north bank in the city center are the Jewish Museum on Untermainkai and the Historical Museum in the old town on Mainkai. A little further from the River Main are in the Old Town area, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Jewish street and the Archaeological Museum at the Carmelite monastery. On the Main Island at the Old Bridge 2006, the New Exhibition Hall portico was opened.

Events

The Museum Embankment Festival is held every year on the last weekend in August, the Night of Museums is, however, held annually in the spring.
