Museum of Antiquities of the University of Leipzig

The Museum of Antiquities of the University of Leipzig is one of the largest university collections of antique cabaret in Germany.

The basis of the collection was placed in the first half of the 18th century, the first antique objects came to the university. In 1734, Johann Friedrich took Christian who was Professor of Poetry, already exhibits the stock in his lectures. Since the early 19th century, the antiquities collection bore the title of the Cabinet of Archaeology and Art. While the basic elements of the collection initially consisted mainly of ancient coins, gems and plaster casts, this changed, as through mediation by Eduard Gerhard 50 Greek and Etruscan vases came to Leipzig. In the same year the collection was complemented by antiques from the WG Becker collection that had this bought on a trip to Italy. In subsequent years, the collection has been greatly expanded through numerous additions of clay lamps, terracotta and other sculptures. In the second half of the 19th century was limited for new acquisitions mainly on plaster casts. This was started under John Overbeck. It was not until 1897 with the purchase of the collection Friedrich Hauser containing other antique exhibits, reacquired original objects on a larger scale. In the first decade of the 20th century, under the directorship of Franz Studniczka the collection of around 300 precious exhibits grew again, which were donated by the Americans Edward Perry Warren and John Marshall, including a significant marble head of Alexander the Great.

Overall, the collection now includes more than 16,000 exhibits, the most significant exhibits include numerous black - and red-figure vases. Since 1844, the collection was not limited to being a Studiersammlung for students, but has excellent exhibits of their existence and the general public. Since 1994 the collection in the Old St. Nicholas School is presented in Leipzig. Head of the respective Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Leipzig, currently Hans -Ulrich Cain.

With the current plans of the University of Leipzig to the complete deletion of the subject " Classical Archaeology " the museum closely associated with the Institute is threatened with closure. The German archaeologists Association launched so on February 10, 2013, an online petition with the aim of preserving Institute and Museum.
