Museum of Asian art of Corfu

The Museum of Asian Art (Greek Μουσείο Ασιατικής Τέχνης, Musio Asiatikis Technic ) in Corfu was founded in 1927 as the Museum of Chinese and Japanese art in 1974 the name was changed. The collection consists largely from donations, which is the largest of Gregorios Manos 10,500 articles dating back to 1927.

Building

The museum is housed in the former Governor's Palace or St. Michael and George Palace. The neoclassical building was constructed in 1819 from Maltese limestone. It was originally the seat of the Knights of the Order of Saint Michael and George as well as the British Prefecture of Corfu. After the annexation of the Ionian Islands in Greece it was temporarily used as a summer residence of the royal family. The building was designed by George Whitmore.
