Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw

The Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Warszawie ( German: Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw) is a museum of contemporary art in Warsaw. The museum was opened in 2007. A new building for the museum is being built according to plans by the Swiss architect Christian Kerez to the Defiladenplatz.

History of the Museum

The museum was founded on a decision of the Polish Minister of Culture in 2005. The responsibility for the museum wearing the Ministry of Culture and the City of Warsaw in equal parts. Joanna Mytkowska is the founding director.

Exhibitions of Polish and international art of the 20th and 21st century find since 2007 in a temporary exhibition at the Ulica Pańska 3, on the western edge of the Defiladenplatzes ( pl. Plac Defilad ) instead.

2007 an international architectural competition was held, which the architects of Christian Kerez decided with a minimalist design for themselves. Kerez has codesigned opened in 2000 Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. The jury was Daniel Libeskind. The new building of the Museum of Modern Art, designed by Kerez has a floor space of 30,000 square meters, and is to be built from 2009 to 2014 on the north side of the Defiladenplatzes near the intersection of Marszałkowska and Świętokrzyska. The L- shaped building is expected to cost EUR 91 million. May 9, 2012 it was announced that the City Planning Office Warsaw is withdrawn from the contract with the architect office CCAW Polska AG.
