A rock band is a band that plays rock music.

Genesis

From about 1964, the rock music evolved from the beat music. Werner Faulstich sees 1964-1968 the pinnacle of rock music, lyrically as well as musically far more complex and challenging than the beat music. The single is losing importance and is surpassed by the by designed, harmoniously composed LP, the thematically conceived concept album and rock opera. The term rock band only came on at the beginning of rock music. With the transformation of rock & roll in a harder, elektrischeren sound came from about 1964, the first rock bands. Pioneers of this music were The Byrds, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Velvet Underground or Jefferson Airplane. Psychedelic dance club came, according to the Billboard from 1966 for the first time in San Francisco and spread to other cities.

As the rock music differentiated into different styles of music, appropriate names like Hard Rock were awarded, Heavy Metal, Underground, funk or punk band from 1967 these music styles präferierenden music groups.

Occupation

Model of the rock band were in terms of their occupation, the beat bands. The classic rock band consists of vocalist, electric guitar, bass guitar and drums, possibly with a keyboard. Often these basic instruments is supported by keyboard instruments like piano, Hammond organ, Mellotron and especially synthesizer. In addition, however all other musical instruments such as wind instruments, strings, folk percussion, string and wind instruments, electronic and percussion instruments are used. One or more principal voices are often supported by backing vocals or choir.

Accruals

According to the definition for a band and the rock band usually consists of at least four people. The term power trio, however, called a rock band in the occupation of only three members, consisting mostly of guitar, bass and drums. Often the guitarist or bassist is simultaneously also the lead singer, the other musicians often sing the backing vocals.

As a supergroup rock band is called, the musicians before in other bands have already been successful and thus gained a greater awareness have (such as Cream or Asia).
