Mustafa el-Nahhas

Mustafa Nahhas Pasha - on (Arabic مصطفى النحاس باشا, DMG Mustafa Nahhas to - Paša; born June 15, 1879 in Samanud, Al - Gharbiyya; † August 23, 1965 in Alexandria ), short Mustafa Nahhas, an Egyptian politician.

Education, activities and exile

He was born in Samanud as the son of a businessman. He graduated in 1896. 1900, he was admitted after the study of law as a lawyer. In 1904 he became a judge. After he had joined the Wafd Party, he was released from the office of judge. He spent the years 1921 to 1923 together with his political ally Saad Zaghlul Pasha in exile in the Seychelles.

Political career

Back in Egypt, he was Minister of Education in 1924. He sat within the Wafd Party as chairman and was by Egyptian Prime Minister. He has 1928, 1930, 1936-1937, 1942-1944, and finally 1950-1952 held this position.

He was in 1944 one of the founders of the Arab League. During the Arab uprising, he founded a committee to strengthen the rights of the Arabs in Palestine. He was one of the signatories of the 1936 Anglo -Egyptian Treaty, which ensured the presence of the British in Egypt. In 1951, he distanced himself from this contract. After the coup by Nasser in 1952 he was imprisoned. He and his wife spent the years 1953 and 1954 in prison.

Nahhas Pasha died on 23 August 1965. His funeral led to a mass demonstration which, although tolerated by the government Nasser, but was not well received.
