Mutnovsky (Russian Мутновский; Mutnowskaja also Sopka, Мутновская сопка ) is a volcano located in the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia. He is one of the most active volcanoes on Kamchatka. Only separated by a valley from Mutnovsky is the active volcano Gorely.

Geology

The volcano Mutnovsky is characterized by four Uniting composite volcanoes. The youngest volcano Mutnovsky IV was established in the early Holocene. The volcanic activity in the Holocene was characterized by moderate phreatomagmatic eruptions. The crater of Mutnovsky has a diameter of up to 2 km and is partially glaciated. Inside and on the outer slopes are numerous fumaroles and geysers, some smaller, which is why the area as Little Valley of Geysers (Russian Малая долина гейзеров, in reference to the further north the Valley of Geysers ) is called.

Geothermal power plant

At the foot of the volcano, 1000 meters above sea level, is the same geothermal power plant Mutnovsky, which consists of two power blocks, each provide an output of 25 megawatts. Overall, the Mutnovsky - power plant draws hot water from 17 wells. The "used " cold water is pumped through six holes in the ground, so that it can be reheated by heat from the layer volcano. The power plant supplies about 30 percent of the electricity for Kamchatka and thus represents an important pillar is in the power supply of Kamchatka, as energy prices are high transport costs 50 to 100 % higher than the Russian average.

"Volcano Dive"

The Russian extreme athlete and former Skysurfing " world champion" Valeri Rosow jumped 18 April 2009 on the volcano from a helicopter and landed on a patch of ice in the crater.
