MV Craigantlet

Front section of the Craigantlet, 2011

The Craigantlet ( other sources say also Craiganlet ) was a Cypriot container ship on February 26, during the 1982 Killantringan Lighthouse at Porta Maggie Bay, Wigtownshire, in southwestern Scotland, ran aground. The container ship was en route from Liverpool to Belfast, as it drove just a few meters away from the lighthouse on the rocks. The lighthouse keeper raised the alarm, and so was the crew of the ship from a Sea King helicopter of 829 Naval Squadron, based at Prestwick, to be saved.

The ship

The ship was built by the shipyard Reposaaren Konepaja in Reposaari, Finland 1972 and ran from the stack.

Consequences of the sinking

As the ship was loaded with containers of dangerous and some of them had been falsely declared as empty, they decided to also face the threat of environmental disaster to evacuate the area for almost six weeks until the affected containers had been cleared away. During this time, the lighthouse installed an automatic beacon.

Today

Parts of the bow are to be seen in 2011 at low water still in the Porta Maggie Bay.
