Mwanza is a 1200 meter high border town in Malawi with about 10,000 inhabitants on the important road from Blantyre to Tete on the Zambezi in Mozambique and a district with an area of ​​2259 km ² and a population of 138 015. The road with one-lane bridge over the Shire at the Mpatamanga gorge is now very well developed with funds from the European Union. It cites as highway towards South Africa. 70 % of international road transport for Malawi are handled in Mwanza.

Mwanza is only as a customs station of importance. On the opposite limit is Zobue in Mozambique. The Mwanza district is a mountainous and agriculturally difficult surroundings, even if the soils are relatively fertile. Nevertheless Mwanza is one of the poorest districts of Malawi. Nutrition, literacy rate and incomes are well below the national average. The World Food Program has the Muyende Bwino Pit Stop founded to combat prostitution in the border town.

Mwanza has a 1000 meter long airstrip, primary and secondary schools and a hospital that treats mainly Mozambicans who are otherwise without any medical care.
