History and Geography

Blantyre was founded in 1895 as the first city in Central Africa. It has around 745 400 inhabitants (estimate 2013). The population increases significantly. Blantyre is the oldest modern city in Malawi and was named after the Scottish town of Blantyre, in the missionary and explorer David Livingstone was born.

Together with the sister city of Limbe Blantyre, located at 1039 meters above sea level in the Shire Highlands, is the second largest city of Malawi and the economic center of the country. Many Malawian and international companies have their registered office or its branch in Blantyre. Blantyre is the capital of the southern region ( administrative division unit ) of Malawi and has a presidential palace. Your eponymous district comprises 2012 km ² with a population of 1,094,000 ( 2013).
