Charlie Bellow is reserved, shy and leads a rather boring life, which he has carefully scheduled. He studied economics and wants later at a large company, the Tiller King Company, work. So expect his parents from him. He currently lives in a small apartment in New York City, together with his friend Leo. With women Charlie has not so much experience. Also the reason for their addiction to alcohol is known. Her fiance - as it turns out at the end of the film, Charlie's cousin - is in fact recently died and thus their life is falling apart.

Confused by her feelings, maybe they were but also their guilt that they let act so she decides for a whole year not to see him. She hopes that this year will heal their wounds and they can continue their lives normally, with Charlie. Because she firmly believes that fate has predestined everything. That's why she asks Charlie to write a letter, which says what he feels. She herself does the same for him. They hide the letters in a cocktail shaker in Central Park. The following year, they do not hear each other. Charlie uses the year in order to improve in everything that he usually took with Jordan. He improves in squash, in kendo and learn front crawl. Not a day goes by that he does not think of Jordan. His roommate thinks this whole thing Charlie do not work well and he should finally let go. Leo can be persuaded to go within this year with ten women it eventually. But do not like him just as Jordan did.

When the year is finally over, Charlie can not wait to go to Central Park to see Jordan again. He waits and waits, but it does not appear. As it seems slow useless, he has to admit that they will not come.

Only a day later she stands up at the agreed meeting point. When she gets there, sits an old man next to the tree under which they had buried their letters. Jordan tells him the story of Charlie and her. The man tells her that she should finally read his letter, he will bring them determined to cry.

Jordan fears already, they would never see Charlie again. But apparently it thinks the fate well with her. Because the mother of her deceased fiancée, so Charlie's Aunt, has arranged a meeting between the two. When Charlie and Jordan look each other in the eye, they can hardly believe it, that they have found each other again.
