Myitsone Dam

The Myitsone Dam ( Burmese မြစ်ဆုံ တာတမံ; literally translated confluence Dam ) is an under construction dam with a hydroelectric plant on the Irrawaddy in Burma ( Myanmar). When it is completed as planned in 2017, the hydroelectric power plant in the list of largest hydroelectric power stations will be at about five tenth. The dam, 152 m long and 152 m high, designed and built by State Peace and Development Council and the China Power Investment Corporation. It is estimated that electricity 3600-6000 megawatts of Yunnan can be produced in China. Beginning of October 2011 it was reported that the Myanmar government has halted the dam project because it was not the will of the people.

Location

The dam construction site is 3.2 km about 42 km north of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State in northern Myanmar below the confluence of the rivers Mali and N'Mai.

The source of both rivers N'mai and Mali are glaciers of the Himalayas in northern Burma near the 28th parallel north. The eastern of the N'mai, is the larger river and rises in Languela Glacier north of Putao. He is not navigable because of its strong current, while the smaller western river, Mali, despite some rapids navigable.

Management

The Irrawaddy / Myitsone Dam is the largest of seven major dams that are immediately planned on Mali, on N'Mai and the Irrawaddy. The Chinese China Power Investment Corporation is project manager of hydropower projects in the confluence area. The seven dams have a combined installed electrical capacity of 13,360 MW. Service year, 16,634 gigawatt hours are provided.

Planning

The dam is planned as a rockfill dam with concrete surface ( CFRD ). He is said to be 152 feet high and just as long. The electrical capacity of 3600 MW will be available from 2017. That would be 16% of the 22,500 MW ( final ) performance of the Three Gorges Dam in China, the world's largest hydroelectric power station. 90 % of the electricity generated will be supplied to China, the rest is for Kachin. China will pay a converted 400 million euros per year.

The artificial lake with a maximum water depth of 290 m is 766 km ² of land inundate 47 villages and distribute more than 10,000 ethnic Jingpo. It will perish also temples, churches and heritage sites.

The construction costs are estimated at $ 3.6 billion and 2.6 billion euros.
