As a child he moved to Spokane, Washington and grew up in a Christian family on a farm on. His father, Richard Bass, died already when Myles was four years old. His mother married after a minister and the family took the surname Kennedy. Kennedy attended Mead High School and found musical inspiration in Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. He started at the age of ten years playing the trumpet and guitar at fifteen. He learned the guitar by copying Jimmy Page's familiar style of play. He found his singing voice by listening to his parents' record collection, which contained footage of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. He also was influenced by Robert Plant. He played guitar in a jazz band and trumpet in a brass band. He also spent some time in a local heavy metal band called Bittersweet with some of his classmates. In 2014 it became known that he was with the Led Zeppelin members John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Jason Bonham in 2008 and met together to play their songs.
